Website Critic: CleaPatrasChoice.com

Alex has allowed us to publicly critic his web site.

Website: www.cleoPatrasChoice.com

Alex sells beauty products online and runs a very successful company.

I’m going to critic the website from Top-Right all the way down to bottom-left, try your best to follow with me.

The top right has the logo, the website slogan, and 800 number. Traditionally the 800 number should go on the right hand side of the page. Humans read from left to right, and you want the call-to-action to always be on the right hand side because again we read from left-to-right and we’ll end up on the right side, by nature.

The “join us on facebook” logo is taking up too much real estate. Make it smaller and move it to the right.

The “search” feature (the the left side) is isolated and doesn’t really look like it belongs there. Plus it’s prime real-estate, so I’d move the search feature to the upper-right corner.

The left hand navigation is also taking up prime real estate: make the upper-navigation bar a drop-down menu, which will leave more space for products, etc.

The main image of a woman looking away is good, however she’s promoting anti-aging cream so a “before and after” campaign of a women with wrinkles and then another picture of her without wrinkles would probably send a bolder message to the prospect.

Also shows “regular price $134“. This should be bigger and it should be slashed out with an “X”.
This goes for every other product that says “on sale for $”. It should show the original price, then slashed out and show the sale price.

I’m not getting any “sense of urgency” when I go to this web site. What about a “March Madness” sale or a “Spring Sale”. Something that motivates me to buy TODAY and not TOMORROW.

The images of “add to bag” and “get more details” are lacking the finesse of a more sophisticated web site. If he adds a better image it’ll probably get more clicks.

The customer review at the bottom of the page should be high up in the page. Testimonials are huge selling points! Move the testimonial to middle of the page, and add the customer’s picture.

The web site is missing “seals”. Add a “verisign seal” for starters.
The web site is also missing a “best seller” section. Which is another thing, at this point in your business, Alex, I hope you’re only adding images of your best sellers at the top of the page.

Alex says he’s going to do a redesign in a couple of months, so when he does I’ll post the results here.

Best,
John

    Hello John,
This is James, I was on your mastermind call last week. I wish i knew what you know about all this stuff. The way you broke down Alex’s web site is so cool. I looked at Alex’s site and I thought it was perfect.

But after reading your input I found myself seeing the small things he was missing.

Can I ask yo a question….why do you ask him to add seals to his website? What is that and why does he need it? I got lost in that part.

    Thanks,
    james snyder

    Thanks John!
I agree with James that I saw a perfect web site until you gave it your cold-hard review.

I emailed you a domain I want you to look at - hopefully you can evaluate it if you have time.

    I have 2 questions:
    1. Same thing James asked, what do you mean by seals?
    2. What the hell is “call-to-action”?

    Love and Respect,
    Jonas Goldberger

I agree that there is a lot to do. My intent was to get an early feel from the drupal community to see where I should focus my efforts into. Given that this is my first drupal website, I spent some time trying to learn on top of making things work. Which is why I wanted to get your impressions.

Thanks again for your advices. I took the site off-line to think about the feedback I received. I also went on your website and I like it. Not being from the Coulee Region, I didn’t sign up. But I have a question in relation to the sections displayed on the frontpage/homepage. I wasn’t sure if I could ask you but after spending some time trying to figure how you did it, I decided I would ask you instead just in case.

It’s actually really simple, now. I had a more complex front page before it got wiped out in the upgrade and haven’t had time to redo it. The mission blocks are just a custom ctools content type and all the theming is in CSS. The whole page is done in Page Manager / Panels.

its about plain but the printers looks good. I agree that more design work is needed.

Thank you for the article, it was very useful. “Selling design for sign-off is a unique topic in and of itself” – It would be great if you could write about this as well!

Yes, this is a problem. For people who don’t get design it’s more about knowing how to sell your decisions to them than it is trying to get valid feedback to improve your designs. Don’t get me wrong, I think client feedback from non-designers is useful, but it’s not the same as a design critique.

On the banks of the Columbia river sits this upscale yet comfortable seafood house. Go for the view, good drinks, and atmosphere. Brunch on the weekends, and mellow live music occasionally. Can get pretty crowded - with a bit of a wait on weekends, so plan accordingly.

I thought the Alexandra vid was quite self explanatory. The girl built up false hope in an Instant Messaging relationship, which resulted in a one night stand. Erm, in the end, the nice girl got screwed.
